Black History Month

February, 2022

Our Center is celebrating Black History month in several ways this February:

We will light a candle on Sundays in honor of Black History Month and highlight one of the many African Americans who have helped make our country strong, free and creative. Listen for our short biographies at the beginning of the Sunday Service on Facebook Live at 11:00 AM PST.

We offer a downloadable booklet featuring the contributions of Black Americans and highlighting a key human value for daily contemplation.

We host a Social Justice Bookclub the first Saturday of each month using Zoom teleconferencing. The book for discussion on February 5th is The Gift of Forgiving, by Desmond Tutu. Contact Nancy Ashley at 503-880-0308 for more information.

Meeting ID: 151 544 688 — Passcode: 199761
If you’re new to zoom, read more about it to get set up before the bookclub.

On March 5th, the bookclub will also be featuring the book: Brothers in the Beloved Community by Marc Andrus. It explores the friendship between Martin Luther King Jr. and Thich Nhat Hanh—icons who changed each other and the world.

We also believe that economic parity is key to solving racial inequality. Consider using local minority-owned and -operated businesses to begin shifting money from the white-dominated power structure. Although we do not endorse any particular business, we provide an index of minority businesses in the greater Portland area for your reference.
