All There Is—Is God

People ask me what our spiritual center is all about—what do we believe—and so forth. Of course, there is the multi-faceted answer that is really long. People generally don’t want that answer and I don’t blame them.

The shorter answer, upon which so much else depends, is our view of God.

We believe that God is the sum total of everything. God is all there is. Everything. Every person, place, thing, idea, energy, matter, form of consciousness—it’s all God. Here’s how our founder, Ernest Holmes, described it in our What We Believe statement:

We believe in God, the Living Spirit Almighty; one, indestructible, absolute and self-existent Cause. This One manifests Itself in and through all creation, but is not absorbed by Its creation. The manifest universe is the body of God; it is the logical and necessary outcome of the infinite self-knowingness of God.

This is not a new idea, of course. Panentheism as a belief has been around since there have been people on the planet. In the Science of Mind, we bring this belief into our spiritual practices and into our daily lives.

It can be a challenging. Many of us were raised to believe that God was a father-figure who lives in a cloudy heaven and looks down upon us judging our thoughts and actions. Like a Santa Claus God, rewards and punishments are given out based upon behaviors and intentions.

Instead we view God as a co-creative force and energy. Since we’re part of God, we think of our lives as a co-creative endeavor. Our thoughts are part of God’s consciousness and God responds to them to help us experience our reality. In a way, our “thoughts become things.” Here’s how Ernest Holmes explains our creative power as God works through us:

We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by this Creative Mind which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it.

These two principles are the foundation of our beliefs in the Science of Mind:

  • God is all there is
  • Our thoughts are creative and, through God’s grace, produce our experience of the world

Although we have many other beliefs, these are the basics. Everything else that we believe is based on these two core principles. Now you know!
